You drop into a racing seat, a real wheel in front of you and pedals under your feet. The wheel feeds back what the car is doing, so you feel when it starts to slide and you learn with your feet how much throttle a corner can take. No VR headset is involved: you keep sight of your hands, your mirrors and the racers beside you.

Up to fourteen racerson the same circuit

It only really comes alive when you race each other. Fourteen seats, one circuit, and a leaderboard on the wall tracking live who is ahead. There are several circuits, so you are not stuck lapping the same one.

Larger groups race in heats: everyone gets a fair run and the rest watch the final standing up. That is the moment people talk about every time.

No licence needed

From age 8and one corner in you have it

You do not need experience and definitely no driving licence. The crew explains the controls in about a minute, and after that you drive. A little getting used to the wheel, and a few corners later you have the hang of it.

We are at the foot of the A'DAM Tower on the IJ, a five minute free ferry from Amsterdam Central.

In a racing game you steer with a controller on a screen. In sim racing you drive the car with a real wheel and pedals, and the simulator responds as naturally as an actual car. Our VR headset completes it: you're in it rather than looking at it.

Up to 14 racers drive live in the same race. Larger groups run in heats with a final ranking.

You race on screens, not with a VR headset on. The simulator is tuned for comfort and most people have no trouble at all. If you don't feel well, the crew helps right away.

Both work. Racing is in Level 1, 2 and 4, or you book a single session from €15 (30 min).

Sim racing is racing on a simulator that replicates the physics of a real car. Wheel, brake and throttle go straight to the vehicle, and the wheel pushes back so you feel what the tyres are doing. The difference from a racing game is that you're not driving on reflexes and buttons but on grip, braking points and racing lines. Exactly why drivers train on them.

At A'DAM VR, in the A'DAM Tower on Overhoeksplein in Amsterdam North. From Amsterdam Central that's five minutes on the ferry, which is free and runs continuously. You can race separately from €15 or combine it with VR and arcade in a pass.

A single session of about 30 minutes costs €15. If you want to do more than race, the simulator is included in Level 1 (€39), Level 2 (€49) and Level 4 (€79). Level 2 combines 30 minutes of racing with 30 minutes of free roam and is the most popular option.
