What exactly is a VR ride?

A VR ride combines a motion seat with a VR headset. The seat tilts, shakes and drops along with what you see, and a fan blows air at you to mimic the wind. That's why a loop in VR actually feels like a loop: your stomach joins in.

The difference with a regular rollercoaster is that the ride isn't fixed to a track. The same seat takes you over the rooftops of Amsterdam one time and through an underwater reef or a haunted castle the next. A ride lasts a few minutes, so you'll easily do several in one visit.

Directly above us in the same tower sits A'DAM Lookout, with the observation deck and the swing that pushes you out over the edge. Plenty of visitors do both back to back: first up for the real view over the city, then down for the virtual version where a coaster launches you straight through it.

Frequently asked questions

Our best-known ride is VR Rollercoaster Amsterdam: you start at the A'DAM Tower and get launched into a coaster across the city. We also have versions through Scheveningen and Stockholm plus four Triotech Storm rides. All seven are in the A'DAM Tower in Amsterdam North.

A ride lasts a few minutes. In a 60-minute pass you'll do several back to back, mixed with the other VR games.

A single ride costs €8.50 at the park. If you want more than just the rides, they are also included in the passes, which start at €39 per person for 60 minutes. That way you play the other worlds too.

From age 8. The gentler rides (Sugary Slope, Reef Rider) work well for kids; Creepy Castle and the coasters are considerably more intense.

Most people are fine, because the seat moves along with what you see. It's the mismatch between image and motion that causes sickness. If you don't feel well, tell the crew; the headset comes off in a second.

Recommended, certainly at weekends. You book a time slot online; for groups of 6 or more you can request a group booking.
